Looking for an Internship at PHW?

We’ve received a few inquiries about internship opportunities at PHW. While we love the chance to introduce students to history and preservation careers, we do need to limit ourselves to just one intern a semester.

If you’d like to apply for a fall internship (August-December 2013) please send a short letter detailing your expectations for your internship and your resume to us at phwi@verizon.net. The cutoff date is April 30, 2013. Good luck, everyone!

PHW Office Closed on Friday, March 29

The PHW office will be closed for regular business on Friday, March 29 while we introduce a group of historic preservation students from Shepherd University to Winchester, our preservation movement, and our downtown. Of course, they’re getting a private tour of the Hexagon House while they’re here. You might spot them looking at our architecture if you’re downtown Friday afternoon!

Help Make Our Events a Success

The Membership and Events Committee is hard at work planning the events roster for 2013. While we have some fabulous event ideas in mind for the upcoming year, we don’t have all the supplies we need to make the events a success. The committee has generated a list of items we will need to have loaned and/or donated:

Card tables
Folding chairs
Tablecloths, preferably white, for card tables
Croquet sets
Flameless candles
Decks of playing cards

Please contact the PHW office at 540-667-3577 or phwi@verizon.net if you have these items, and let us know if these will be available for loan or for donation. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, items donated to PHW may qualify as a tax-deductible contribution.

Hurricane Sandy Closure

If the hurricane is as bad as predicted, the office will be closed tomorrow, October 30. That doesn’t mean PHW work will stop, though! If the electricity and internet stays on, you can look forward to another post on the Noakes house. Even if we are without electricity, there are house sketches and thank you notes that can be done by candlelight tomorrow. Stay safe and dry, everyone!

Apple Blossom Reminder

As usual, the PHW office will be closed on Friday for Apple Blossom. While you are out and about enjoying the Bloom in Winchester, remember to bring your cameras and look for some interesting architectural details to submit to our Uncovering Your Hidden Gems photo contest. The Old Town Midway and the parade routes pass through our historic district, so you’re sure to see something neat for the contest this weekend!

This vintage postcard, along with several other Apple Blossom-themed cards from the Shenandoah Valley and beyond, is for sale at CardCow.com.

Maintenance at the Hexagon House

Be careful if you plan to visit the PHW office in the next few days. We are having some maintenance work done to our rear porch, which is our main entrance to the building. We’re down to the joists and a piece of plywood right now!

Office Closed on Friday

The PHW office will be closed on Friday, April 6 for the Easter holiday. Normal office hours will resume Monday, April 9. You may still place ticket reservations for “Manhattan(s) in Winchester” via voicemail at (540) 667-3577, email at phwi@verizon.net, or purchase via Paypal over the holiday weekend. But hurry — only 15 tickets remain!

The lovely vintage Easter card is part of the e-card collection at CardCow.com.
