Northern Shenandoah Valley Branch Quarterly Meeting

Please note: The quarterly meeting has been postponed because of the snow. Information will be posted concerning the new time when it becomes available.

The Northern Shenandoah Valley Branch of Preservation Virginia will hold its next quarterly meeting on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the historic Springsbury Farm in Clarke County, Virginia. Free and open to the public, the meeting will offer a rare opportunity to tour this historic former plantation along the Shenandoah River. Following a short business meeting, Barbara Shea, president of Casey Trees Farm, will provide a tour of the property and light refreshments will be served.

Directions to Springsbury Farm from downtown Berryville: Take East Main Street to John Enders Boulevard. Turn right onto John Enders Boulevard. Turn left onto Springsbury Farm Road. Continue on Springsbury Farm Road to its end at Springsbury Lane. Go down the hill. The Trooper House, where the meeting will take place, will be on the left, before the barns. Charles Broadway Rouss Day

Charles Broadway Rouss Day will be celebrated this year on February 13. In the case of inclement weather, the events will be rescheduled for February 20.

11:00am- Rouss City Hall, 15 N. Cameron St, 4th floor Exhibit Hall (former City Hall Auditorium), "Illustrated History of Rouss City Hall" presentation by Tim Youmans

Noon - Guided tour of Rouss City Hall (begin at Rouss Statue in the Main Foyer)

12:50pm- Lunch downtown (on your own)- Ask for restaurants featuring Rouss Day specials.

1:00pm-3:00pm- Charley Rouss Fire Company, 3 S. Braddock St, Open House, including view of upper floor where annual Rouss banquets were held

The office will be closed on Christmas Day. As a reminder, the Revolving Fund property reviews will begin on the 28th, weather permitting. The office will also close for New Year's Day.

It's that time of the year again -- PHW will be taking the yearly photographic inventory of covenant and easement properties beginning December 28 in preparation for the yearly review. The process will likely last until January 8. Property owners do not need to do anything in preparation for this survey.

Holiday House Tour Snow Plan

The Holiday House Tour Preview Party will proceed tonight 6-9 PM, regardless of the snow. Please remember to dress for the weather and watch your step! As a reminder, ticket holders for the Preview Party may also use their tickets to visit the houses on Sunday during the Daylight Tour.

If you need Preview Party tickets, a limited number are available at the Bough and Dough Shop at 124 W. Boscawen Street and the other ticket sale locations.

Call for Entries: Traditional Design Challenge

This year's Traditional Design Challenge at the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference in Baltimore will be a live team-competition. Each design team will consist of up to three participants working together for two days to design and hand-draw a new "old" house that could fit into one of Baltimore's most famous historic neighborhoods.

Summer 2009 Places that Matter Photo Contest

The National Trust for Historic Preservation and Fireman's Fund Insurance are proud to announce the start of the Summer 2009 Places that Matter Photo Contest. Submit photos of your favorite places - whether they're national monuments or right in your own backyard - and be eligible to win one of three digital cameras.

Entering the contest is easy!

1. Download our This Place Matters sign - or make one of your own!

2. Take your photo in front of a place that matters to you.

3. Add it to the National Trust's pool of places that matter across the country!

You may enter as many digital photos as you wish between now and Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Ten photos will be selected as finalists, after which a public online vote will determine the final winners.

The photo with the most votes will win the grand prize of a Panasonic Lumix ZS3 digital camera! Each of two runners-up will receive a Panasonic Lumix ZS1 digital camera, and all three winners will also receive a Sandisk Extreme III 8GB SD memory card.

NSV Quarterly Branch Meeting at Zirkle Mill

Please join us for the next general membership meeting of the Northern Shenandoah Valley (NSV) Branch of Preservation Virginia. We will be meeting on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the historic Andrew Zirkle Mill in Forestville, Virginia. The meeting offers a rare opportunity to see this historic grist mill which is not normally available for tours.

Estimated to have been built in the 1760s by Andrew Zirkle and his brothers, the Zirkle Mill was in operation for more than 180 years, until the late 1940s, and retains much of its original machinery. The mill was not burned during the Civil War, as were most commercial buildings of the era, probably due to its location and the lack of visibility from the main road. The mill is currently under restoration. For more information, visit www.historiczirklemill.org.

Following the meeting, light refreshments will be served and mill owner (and NSV Branch Shenandoah County Trustee) Rob Andrews will conduct tours of the mill building. If you plan to attend the meeting, please dress appropriately for touring the mill building (sturdy shoes!) and, if possible, bring a chair. Directions to the mill from southbound I-81: Take exit 273 (Mount Jackson). At the bottom of the off-ramp, turn right onto Mount Jackson Road. Turn left onto South Middle Road (there is a stop sign at this intersection) and continue to the town of Forestville (about 5 miles). Turn left onto Route 767 (Quicksburg Road). The mill is located on the right, 1/8 mile. Parking lot is across the road, by the historic marker.

Mount Hebron Cemetery Tour

Mike Foreman, Board President of Mt. Hebron Cemetery, is providing a tour of Mt. Hebron along with Donald Shade, Supervisor. The tour is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 9th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The tour is free and open to the public. Meet at the chapel at the entrance to Mt. Hebron located at the end of Boscawen Street near the offices to the Winchester Star.

From the famous to the also very interesting not so famous people who are laid to rest at Mt. Hebron - you will gain a true perspective of local and regional history. Did you know that General Patton's grandfather and great uncle are buried at Mt. Hebron. And of course - Daniel Morgan.

Interested in horticulture and trees? There is quite a collection at Mt. Hebron.

The Rouss Mausoleum will be open. Few have seen the interior of this structure and will discover a beautiful Tiffany window there - really remarkable!

Boots and Hats for Patsy Cline

The Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Celebrating Patsy Cline, Inc. announce the first annual "Boots-n-Hats for Patsy Cline" event to be held Friday, September 4 at 7:00 pm in The George Washington Hotel, 103 E. Piccadilly St., Winchester. The event will feature a best boots and hat contest, a silent auction, and music by Brent Woodall and The Natchez Trace Band. Patsy Cline tribute artist and singer/songwriter Thom Shepherd will also perform.

Tickets for the event cost $50 (includes food, music and fun!) and can be purchased at the Winchester-Frederick County Visitor Center, 1400 S. Pleasant Valley Rd., Celebrate, located at 1 S. A Handbook and Resource Guide for Owners of Virginia's Historic Houses

Camille Agricola Bowman has written a 64 page book for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. It provides valuable information on good stewardship practices, basic preservation issues, and additional sources to turn to for expert advice on various maintenance and restoration matters. Single books are $10; discounts are available for larger quantities.

John Kirby Day

The Fifth Annual John Kirby Day Jazz Festival will be held July 25th from 2-8 PM at the Douglass Community Center, 598 North Kent Street. Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club and Preservation Workdays at the Douglas Learning Center. In addition to the usual jazz festival, several items will be raffled between sets, including two vintage John Kirby albums.

2009 INSIGHT Citizen's Academy

Get to know your local government! This 12-week INSIGHT Citizen's Academy provides area residents an opportunity to discover their City government through interactive, hands-on experience and to gain exposure to the wide range of government services, programs, functions and challenges. You do not have to be a city resident to participate. All you need is an interest in the way City government operates!

Unveiling Plans to Restore Patsy Cline's Home

Celebrating Patsy Cline, Inc. (CPC) is pleased to unveil its plans to restore 608 South Kent Street in Winchester, the home of country music legend, Patsy Cline.

At the core of a phased-in Patsy Cline presence in Winchester, the historic home will portray the story of Patsy's Winchester years with accurate historic furnishings and historic imagery. CPC and its partners will build a radiating network of public programs, tours, and special event throughout the Winchester region to celebrate the life and legacy of Patsy Cline. Media: Press conference will include announcements of capital campaign commitments and several fundraising programs, selection of building contractor, and occasion to interview the official house historian. Media will have first opportunity to tour and photograph house prior to start of restoration work. The house has never been open to the public before this press conference.

Note: Location does not have access for electricity to support recording/video devices.
