This Place Matters Photo Campaign
Last year, the National Trust started a campaign called "This Place Matters." It is a simple campaign: Take a photo of yourself in front of a place that is significant to you. Share why your place matters - be it a nationally recognizable landmark or your favorite local diner, they are all priceless to you, and we want to hear your story.

This year, Preservation of Historic Winchester is asking you to do the same. Here's how you can share your significant place with us:

    1. Make a sign or banner with the words "THIS PLACE MATTERS." You can download and print a sign from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's website here.

    2. Take a photo of yourself, or a group of friends, at your favorite place holding your sign. Or you can make a "mini-documentary" and upload the clip on YouTube.com.

    3. Share your story and photo/video in the comments of this news event from May 1 to May 30. Files should be hosted online through a hosting site like Photobucket, Flickr, or YouTube to use this option.

    4. Alternately, if you do not have online file hosting, you can submit your photo and story directly to PHW's email, phwi@verizon.net, or regular mail addressed to PHW, 530 Amherst St., Winchester, VA 22601.

    5. There is no limit to the number of places you may submit.

    6. All stories, photos, and videos submitted to PHW via the website, email, or mail will be collected and posted on this page. Photos and/or stories may be used in a display at PHW's Annual Meeting in June.

And while you're at it, why not submit your story and photo to the national campaign and the National Trust's Google Map?

Note on leaving images with your comments:
Blogger-powered comments do not accept the image tag so you will need to share your photo as a link. Many file hosting sites automatically generate this code for you. Copy the direct HTML link and paste into the comment box with your story.

National Preservation Month Proclamation
Mayor Minor proclaimed May to be National Preservation Month and presented PHW a plaque to that effect. Franklin Wright, PHW's president, was on hand to present her in turn with a copy of "Winchester: Limestone, Sycamores and Architecture" in appreciation for her support of preservation efforts.

Read the proclamation here.

Last night also saw Sandra Bosley thanked before the Frederick County Board of Supervisors for her help on behalf of PHW with a student project concerning the Old Jail at 317 S. Cameron Street. The presentation was part of the Government Services Learning project of four Sherando High School students who successfully researched and applied for a Winchester Historic Plaque.

National Preservation Month Is Coming!
As many of you are aware, May is National Preservation Month. PHW has lined up several excellent events to celebrate in 2009, including a Winchester Underground tour of the Lovett Building on May 9, a special edition of the newsletter, and a photo campaign to tie into the National Trust's theme "This Place Matters." More information on these events will be posted soon.

Since the photo campaign requires some help from our readers, the instructions are being posted early so you can start thinking about your special places. Click here for the PDF instructions and example submission. If you have questions or comments about the "This Place Matters" photo project, don't hesitate to leave a comment or email for us.
