PHW Fall Program Updates

We’ve been quiet at PHW lately…because we’re hard at work on Holiday House Tour! All the houses are set this year for the December 7 and 8 event. There are still a few things we’re working on to bring the tour together, however, and here’s where you can help:

Ad space is still available in the program booklet (prices range from $75 to $250) and a Major Sponsor slot at $1000. The deadline to get an ad in the booklet is October 31; email us at phwi@verizon.net if you have questions or want to place an ad.

Volunteers are always needed. If you are willing to be a docent on December 7 and 8, or if you want to be added to PHW’s list of volunteer decorators to work in the houses before the event, please send your contact info to phwi@verizon.net with your job preferences.

But that’s not all on our events calendar! Don’t forget the Membership Signup Contest is going on until Dec. 6. Our next Lunch and Learn Lecture with Maral Kalbian on “How to Research Your Historic House” is set for noon at the 126 N. Kent St. on Oct. 29, to be followed on Nov. 12 by David Logan with “How to Restore and Repair Historic Wood Windows.”

Friday Photos: Piccadilly Street

West Piccadilly Street PHW is winding down our Friday Photos series for this year with another selection of images pulled from our slide collection. This selection highlights buildings along East and West Piccadilly Street, which includes such favorite structures as the Handley Library, the former Colonial Arts and Crafts building, and the CSX Train Station. Don’t miss the virtual tour of the commercial hub of East Piccadilly Street for a walk down memory lane (longtime residents will spot many familiar and beloved stores from days gone by).

The Friday Photos posts will take a hiatus during the Holiday House Tour season, but will be returning in January 2014 with a special year-long series in conjunction with PHW’s 50th anniversary.

Friday Photos: Rouss Avenue and Court Square

Court Square Fittingly, today’s photos are a selection of slides taken around the old Frederick County Court House, Rouss Avenue, and the Feltner Building at 9 Court Square. Before you visit the Feltner Building tonight for PHW’s Memberfest from 6-9 PM, be sure you refresh your memory of what this area looked like before and during the extensive renovations in the 1990s.

Friday Photos: Sharp Street

Sharp Street Today we visit one of the lesser known architectural treasure troves in Winchester with Sharp Street. Originally known as Warwick Street, and also sometimes recorded as Sharpe Street, this interesting street features some unusually fine brick buildings, particularly for the east end of the Historic District. Some buildings of note include the Evans Hotel at 224 Sharp Street, a boarding school operated in the 1830s by Quaker schoolmaster John W. Marvin at 219 Sharp Street, an excellent example of an early Federal style brick house at 214 Sharp Street, an excellent early duplex with an unusual central chimney at 207-209 Sharp Street. George Sharp, the man for whom the street was renamed, had his home in another excellent example of Federal style architecture at 223-225 Sharp Street. The building is perhaps more famous today as reportedly having served as a house of ill repute.

Take some time to visit this little street with its myriad of excellent and colorful historical buildings with this collection of images from the 1970s to the 1990s from PHW’s slide collection.

The presentation by Bill Buettin covers financing basics, financial analysis of real estate, a deconstruction of the Taylor Hotel project financing, and projection on the interest rate environment. Also included is the question and answer session at the end of the PowerPoint presentation. Fans of the Taylor Hotel project may want to skip to the 35 minute mark to see the financial case study on this unusual project.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the next lecture, “How to Green Your Historic Preservation Project” with Chuck Swartz, to be held October 3, noon at the Lewis Jones Knitting Mill, 126 N. Kent St.
